Hodgepodge

The pack's catch-all patch mod. It fixes vanilla and other mods from the outside, so its changes turn up everywhere: dupes, crashes, vanilla behaviour that needed tweaking, and performance. Its memory-leak fixes are listed with the rest of the pack's under Performance.

EndlessIDs replaces NotEnoughIds

The first time you open a 2.8.4 world, a screen asks you to confirm its conversion to EndlessIDs, then saves a zip backup of the world to your saves folder before loading it. A dedicated server asks the same in its console: type /fml confirm, or start it with -Dfml.queryResult=confirm. The server's backup lands next to its world folder. Blocks and their metadata carry over. Each chunk is rewritten in the new format as it is loaded and saved, so going back to 2.8.4 means restoring that backup.

EndlessIDs raises the biome ID limit from 256 to 65,536 and doubles the item ID limit to 64k. Block IDs and 16-bit metadata stay where NotEnoughIds had them.

Improvements to sound pipeline

Stereo sound effects in the world are now positioned at their source; before, they played unpositioned in both ears. A Sound Enhancements button under Options > Music & Sounds opens a menu with Headphone HRTF, Output Limiter, Environmental Reverb with a Reverb Amount slider, Stereo Downmix, Stereo Spatialization and Output Device. Environmental Reverb is off by default. Output Device switches without a restart. If the chosen device disappears, sound moves to the system default and comes back when the device returns. HRTF, the limiter, stereo spatialization and the device picker need Java 17 or newer; on Java 8, Stereo Downmix mixes stereo sound effects down to mono so they can still be positioned. Up to 8 music and record streams can play at once, up from 4. Decoding a large sound no longer stalls the client. Loaded sounds take about half the memory.

Toggle inventory effect icons

The potion effect list beside the inventory, with its icons, names and timers, can now be switched off with showInventoryEffectIcons in the tweaks section of the Hodgepodge config. It is on by default and needs a restart to change. Effect displays from other mods, such as Adventure Backpack or InGame Info XML, stay as they are.

New features and content

The survival inventory has a new texture, with the 2x2 crafting grid and its output moved slightly up and right. While moveInventoryCraftingGrid is on, a resource pack's own inventory texture no longer applies. Music now comes back 5 seconds to 5 minutes after a track ends, where vanilla waited 10 to 20 minutes in the Overworld; musicDelayMinSeconds and musicDelayMaxSeconds set the range. The crosshair is hidden while any screen other than chat is open.

Creative players can eat food without using it up. Redstone dust has a selection box that follows the wire, as in 1.12. Bonemeal on grass in the Lavender Fields biome can grow lavender. On a server, death messages name mobs in your own language, and Wither Skeletons are called Wither Skeleton instead of Skeleton. The Fast Block Placing toggle is remembered across restarts.

The Hodgepodge config screen has a new Sound category for the sound system's channel counts, attenuation and buffers. With f1ShowHand turned on, F1 gets a third step that hides the HUD but keeps your hand. bopFogDisable in the asm section turns off the Biomes O' Plenty biome fog. On a server, raising movedTooQuicklyThreshold in the fixes section above its vanilla 100.0 stops fast flight, such as a GraviChestplate with Thaumic Boots, from pulling the player back. The launch arguments --quickPlaySingleplayer <world> and --quickPlayMultiplayer <address> open a world or join a server straight from the launcher; the world can be its save folder, its name or latest.

Performance

New chunks are generated a few per tick within a time budget instead of all at once, so flying into new terrain stalls the server less; trees and other decoration can appear a moment after the ground. Chunks also save and unload faster. A world save no longer rewrites a dimension's forced chunk list when nothing in it changed. Item frames stop drawing their item beyond 64 blocks, and the frame itself beyond 96.

GregTech and AE2 blocks send their tile entity updates as raw bytes instead of compressed NBT, which cuts network traffic and client work near large bases. World generation skips work that changes nothing: sand and gravel resting on solid ground get no falling tick, and new springs no longer set off chains of block updates. Leaf decay checks are cheaper. Dropped items no longer check for collisions with other entities.

The game also starts faster. Wavefront models load about three times faster, block and item icons are no longer registered twice, and Forge's event transformer, CoFH's access transformer, mod discovery, Thaumcraft's infusion recipe lookup and resource reloads all take less time.

Fixes

Reconnecting to a server no longer leaves a clone of you behind with a copy of your inventory: the server now waits for your previous session to leave first. An item frame punched in the same tick a piston breaks it no longer drops its item twice. A stack shift-clicked into a BiblioCraft Fancy Sign is no longer multiplied. Breaking a BiblioCraft Armor Stand no longer destroys the block in its other half, which closes a dupe with the Portable Hole and the Arcane Worktable. Bone meal used on an IC2 rubber sapling is no longer spent twice, which could turn the last piece into an endless stack.

Items placed on BiblioCraft shelves, tables and armor stands are now saved instead of sometimes vanishing on reload. Thaumcraft's Outer Lands keep their labyrinth data across a server restart. A chunk that reloads while its save is still being written no longer comes back as the older copy. A vanilla furnace burning a fuel that lasts longer than 32767 ticks, such as a Solid Super Fuel block, keeps its burn time through a save and reload. Furnaces also save the burn time of their current fuel, so the WAILA fuel bar is right after a reload. Slimes keep their damage through a reload instead of healing to full.

Potion effects longer than 27 minutes keep their icon and real timer, and timers past an hour read h:mm:ss. Villagers stop offering a trade once it is used up, so shift-clicking a trade result no longer hands out ghost items. Electric armor drains charge instead of losing durability when its own Thorns enchantment fires or a falling block lands on the helmet, so neither can break it. Wither Skeletons no longer flicker in sunlight. Biomes O' Plenty mountain biomes no longer place vanilla emerald ore. Filled IC2 tin cans now count toward Nutrition. Dropped items no longer bounce on stairs and cauldrons. Falling mobs no longer sink into the ground as they land. On a server, a bed above Y 127 no longer drops you below the world. Golems in dimensions with an ID above 127, such as personal dimensions, keep their markers after a reload.

The game no longer crashes when two IC2 reactors share reactor chambers, when a piston with an invalid facing is powered, or when a mod sends a chat message to a fake player. IC2 keys no longer fire while a GUI is open, so typing in NEI no longer lifts you on a jetpack or Thaumium Reinforced Wings. Ctrl+A, C, V and X now work in text fields with non-Latin keyboard layouts such as Cyrillic. In third person, the boss health bar no longer turns black.
